Sheringham Classic Car & Bike Show

About this time in June, every year, Sheringham hosts the annual classic car and bike show. We've had a wander around most years and the Square Four has been to a few; this year son Thomas came, bringing the Huntmaster back to Sheringham from his garage in the city.

It's time for the 500 mile service and general checkover and the bike appears to be going well.

He says he has a list of jobs for me - some of which I'll do and some of which I'll quietly ignore...

It's quite mucky and appears to have leaked all of its fork oil over the rest of the machine. It's also smoking as it always has done but that really needs looking at.

He says the clutch is slipping - and it is adjusted rather too tightly. On entering the show the marshals made us ride at walking pace behind a Rolls-Royce Corniche which was quite testing for these air-cooled machines. When it came for departure at 16:00 the Huntmaster started straight away and I rode it home but it was clear that the Square Four clutch was slipping far too much to start the bike. I got the tools out in front of The Crown - the garden was packed full of people so I had an audience as I slackened off the clutch cable.

Fortunately that was enough to get sufficient torque through the clutch to kick it over and start it - which it did first time. It's slipping really badly and it's clear that it's been too tight like the Huntmaster one and that the slow ride through the town was too much.

Note to self here - keep enough play in the clutch cable!

Fashionable gear for 40's Weekend

First published October 2018

Some of you will know that we have a fabulous 1940's weekend here in Sheringham. The event was initially organised by the North Norfolk Railway and is still a mainstay event of their calendar, but in recent years '40's weekend has extended into the rest of the town.

Some 20,000 people visited Sheringham for this year's event, many of them turned out in 1940's costume. These YouTube videos give a good flavour of the event:

And there is a display of vintage military and civilian vehicles at the main locations: Holt NNR Station, Weybourne NNR Station, Sheringham NNR station and in Sheringham itself.

There's always a few bikes to look at:

2015 Event - Ariel W/NG from the Norfolk Motorcycle Museum at North Walsham

2015 Event - Royal Enfield WD/CO

2016 Event - Matchless G3L

And here's another G3L, a visitor from London at the 2018 event:

There's a vehicle parade on the Saturday, and this year I was riding my 1942 W/NG. Not being at all well prepared, I had no period attire to wear and I wore my Barbour lookalike - originally designed in 1936 - but that was about it. The modern flip front helmet didn't help.

The bike looks OK, the rider is trying....
So for next year I have a new hat to wear. It's a period Slazenger helmet, from the 1950's in reality:

It must be a good one, look at those famous names:

It's actually my size...

I'm not going to win any fashion competitions though.

Does my nose look big in this?
I've got these brown leather gauntlets made by Lawson's of London, known by the previous owner to date to 1960 or earlier:

They are in great condition, sheepskin inside and very comfortable. Just the sort of thing I used to wear when I started riding in the '70's.

And here it is in use in 2019, with a dapper chap from the VMCC Anglian Section on a Guzzi 500S - from 1936:

Sheringham Vintage Transport Festival

The North Norfolk Railway's annual Vintage Transport Festival and Bus Weekend is one of the events that I always attend here in North Norfolk. There's something for every taste, and this year we did the vintage bus trip with my two Grandsons on the Saturday. On Sunday, the busses, and there were 17 of them this year, are joined by cars at Holt station, including Morris Minors at Weybourne, and motorcycles at Sheringham. The buses are free and take you from Sheringham to Holt town centre via Holt station. Here's a few of them:

1957 Dennis Lancet UF Bus
There were single-deckers - we went to Holt on this one.
1966 Daimler CVG6LX/30 Bus
Double deckers like this one, and a couple of RouteMasters, with some coaches as well:
1948 AEC Regal Coach
Sunday dawned sunny and bright as it often seems to for this weekend. Norfolk is a dry county and the grass here on Sheringham station was plenty hard enough to support a few old two-wheelers:

This Dominator is a regular. It's owned by Mike from Brooke and is lovely.

I particularly like this Gold Flash:

Some of the older bikes in the display:

A common sight around here - 1951 Ariel Square Four:

Ariels always attract the ladies:

Another Ariel:

Unusual sight - a Honda CB450. I'm guessing 1970?

As usual, several Velocette's attended the event. Five this year:

Some scooters:

The ubiquitous Bantam:

And when I returned to collect the last of my bikes, all that was left was my lonely W/NG alongside this very original F-B Plover 78.

I think I know where this one lives, so I'll have to see if I can make contact with the owner.

Last weekend saw some dry weather and the annual Sheringham Carnival Classic Car and Bike Show. We've attended a few of these before:

I'm quite surprised putting this post together that this is the 5th show we've attended - how time flies. This year was a good event - it didn't rain, and I had a chance to meet few enthusiasts I hadn't met before.
